Dodge Announces Blacktop Packages for 2013 Charger, Challenger, and Avenger Models

Dodge has introduced its new Blacktop packages for its Charger, Challenger, and Avenger models. Check out this link to see the new packages with a video included! bit.ly/SxJvFd

For the Avenger, the Blacktop pack adds a gloss black grille, dark-tinted headlamp bezels, a body-colored rear spoiler and unique 18-inch gloss black aluminum wheels. And if you don't want to go for the full-on murdered out black car approach, Dodge will offer the Blacktop package on Avengers painted in red, white, tungsten and silver, as well. Here on the 2013 Avenger, the Blacktop treatment adds $595 to the car's MSRP, and can even be had with additional options like the 3.6-liter Pentastar V6, premium audio system and navigation – for some extra coin.

The Challenger Blacktop starts as an R/T coupe with the 5.7-liter Hemi V8 and adds unique appearance touches like 20-inch gloss black wheels, a blacked-out grille, blacked-out fuel door and a new matte graphite body stripe with red accents. Blacktop models also come standard with the Challenger's Super Track Pak, adding Goodyear Eagle F1 tires, higher-performance brakes, a better steering ratio, monotube shock absorbers and three-mode stability control. Ticking the Blacktop option will add $1,995 to the Challenger R/T's bottom line.

How Car Baby Seats Work

You've got your car, but now you need to make sure you can take car of your family during the day-to-day drives. Check out this article from Internetautoguide.com: bit.ly/ZeERRi

"Rear-Facing

According to Car-Safety.org, a rear-facing car seat is the safest way for an infant to ride in a vehicle. The group recommends that children be kept in rear-facing car seats until they are at least 2 years old, although the manufacturer of a particular car seat may have a different requirement. At a minimum, it's recommended that infants stay rear-facing until they are at least 1 year old or weigh 20 pounds.

Centrally Located

In addition to installation in a rear-facing position, the safest place for an infant car seat is in the middle of a vehicle's back seat. Although it's common to install the car seat on either of the window seats, it's not the safest installation spot. Children are half as likely to be injured when seated in a centrally located child car seat in the event of an accident, since it's the farthest possible position away from side impact.

Proper Recline

Another important aspect of child seat safety is the recline position of the seat. For newborns, recline the seat halfway so that the child's airway is kept open and his neck and head are fully supported. Tighten the shoulder strap so it fits snugly on the child. This way, the child is kept securely in place and not jostled around while the vehicle is in motion."

Understanding How Traffic Works

Waynesburg Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram

Tired of traffic? Check out this article from Howstuffworks.com to see how this everyday event really affects you: bit.ly/SllxNM

"The 2007 study revealed that in 28 urban areas, including cities like Boston, Detroit, Atlanta, San Francisco, Orlando and Minneapolis-St. Paul, drivers spent an entire work week sitting in traffic each year. In Los Angeles, the country's benchmark for traffic congestion, it could be up to nearly two weeks.

Traffic has serious consequences, and not just on your well-being. The estimated cost of traffic for 2005 was more than $78 billion (in fuel and wasted time), and that doesn't take into account factors like environmental damage or health costs due to pollution [source: TTI]. In fact, Americans bought 2.9 billion extra gallons of gas because of traffic congestion. The average annual cost to an individual driver was $710 [source: TTI]."

5 Ways to Avoid Getting Pulled Over

After accidents, getting pulled over is the next thing that can keep you from getting where you need to go. Check out this article from Edmunds.com on how to avoid getting pulled over: bit.ly/VDTCz3

"3. Hazardous driving. This is a catch-all category for common violations that each of our experts noted. Wiles ticks off his favorites without hesitation: stop sign and stoplight violations, improper lane changes, illegal U-turns, failures to yield and unsafe speeds. CHP officer McElroy says he sees people who apparently have forgotten they're driving cars: They're busy shaving, eating and even changing clothes. And what exactly is the violation you're committing when you're changing clothes in a car? "Unsafe speed," he says. "There is no safe speed for pulling a shirt off over your head while driving."

4. Equipment violations. Everyone knows the movie scene where a cop smashes a taillight to justify a traffic stop. But in real life, there's little need for that, our experts say. People commit a multitude of code violations all on their own. Leading the list are heavily tinted windows, burned-out headlights, broken windshields, expired tags, the lack of a front license plate (in California and some other states) and loud exhaust modifications.

5. Following too closely and improper lane changes. This one was a tie. Both of these violations are forms of hazardous driving that our police sources specifically called out. McElroy says that on the freeways of Los Angeles, following too closely can easily cause accidents by shortening a driver's reaction time. Combine that with cell phone use or texting and it is a recipe for disaster, he says."

Around the Ron Lewis Lots in October

Thank you for visiting the Ron Lewis Automotive Group online! Here's our news from "Around the Lots" this October:

  • We are hiring! We're seeking automotive technicians for positions across our dealership group and would like to talk to you whether you have years of experience, or are an apprentice. Emailaharding@ronlewisautomotive.com if you are interested.
  • Who doesn't want a great deal? This month Chrysler is extending "Ram Power Days" and its "Jeep Celebration Event."  This means great incentives on the 2012 Jeep Liberty and 2012 Ram 1500 Quad Cab 4x4 Hemi (say that 10 times fast).  With 3x the inventory, we have the best selection of Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram vehicles in Western Pennsylvania!
  • Don't miss our new Service and Parts coupons now posted that are redeemable at each one of our locations in Pleasant Hills, Cranberry, Waynesburg and Beaver Falls. Click here for more details.  Now's the time to think about "winterizing" your vehicle before the really cold weather hits.
  • What's your favorite car or truck color? I vote for my "Dozer" colored Jeep Wrangler Rubicon.   Annual rankings">Annual rankings on the most popular vehicle colors were just released by PPG Industries, Inc, the automotive paint supplier to General Motors Co., Ford Motor Co. and others. White is the reigning most popular vehicle color, with Silver ranking second.  So maybe "Dozer" isn't in the top 10 list, but I'm liking how the color "pops!"
  • This month we'll be finishing the Jeep Grand Cherokee "Go Anywhere, Do Anything" vacation package giveaway on our  Facebook">Facebook page. Take a look at the vacation packages being offered and enter to win!
  • Speaking of Facebook, we're celebrating now that we've crossed the 500 fan mark and our $500 Apple Gift Cardwinner has been announced! We're already on the way to 600 and will give another one away with the 1,000th fan. Thank you for your interest and involvement on our page! We're always looking at ways we can bring you up-to-date car and truck news as well as coupons, free tickets, and dealership event information.

At each Ron Lewis Automotive Group dealership, we strive to make your automotive search, purchase, and/or service experience truly exceptional. Whether you are a first-time driver, seeking a family-friendly vehicle, work truck, or a fun luxury car to add to your collection, we're committed to working with you to find the best vehicle to fit your lifestyle and budget.
We want you to have an exceptional experience at our dealerships that you'll want to tell your family and friends about. We consider all customer feedback an opportunity to give our staff credit where credit is due, or as an opportunity to continually improve our dealerships.

We're here to serve all of your automotive needs.  Let us know how we can assist you today!

Fuel Consumption is Directly Related to Vehicle Care

“Many motorists don’t realize that fuel consumption is directly related to vehicle care and has a significant impact on how much you pay at the pump,” said Rich White, executive director, Car Care Council. “Gas prices can climb quickly, but the good news is that you can fight back. By properly maintaining your vehicle, you can improve your vehicle’s fuel economy and keep more money in your pocket.”

In addition to vehicle maintenance, modifying driving habits, such as observing the speed limit and avoiding quick stops and starts, can also increase fuel efficiency. Consolidating trips, avoiding excessive idling and removing unnecessary items from the trunk are simple ways to reduce fuel consumption.

  • Keep your car properly tuned to improve gas mileage by an average of 4 percent.
  • Keep tires properly inflated and improve gas mileage by 3 percent.
  • Replace dirty or clogged air filters on older vehicles to improve gas mileage by as much as 14 percent.
  • Replace dirty spark plugs, which can reduce mileage by two miles per gallon.
  • Change oil regularly and gain another mile per gallon.
  • Check the gas cap. Damaged, loose or missing gas caps allow gas to vaporize into the air

The Car Care Council is the source of information for the “Be Car Care Aware” consumer education campaign promoting the benefits of regular vehicle care, maintenance and repair to consumers. For a free copy of the council’s Car Care Guide or for more information, visit www.carcare.org.

Waxing and Detailing

One of the most important and often overlooked aspects of car ownership is exterior car cleanliness.

Popular Mechanics writes:

Scrub Down
Cars get dirty. But there's more than just dirt and rain spots clinging to your car's exterior. Airborne industrial pollutants, acid rain, dead bugs, tree sap and bird droppings can all degrade the paint. Modern car finishes are all covered with a clear coat to protect the pigmented main layer, but even this UV-resistant outer layer will last longer if you maintain it. Keep things clean and waxed to repel water and pollutants.

The same goes for your car's interior. That slimy patina of French fries, Big Gulp, sweat and dirt will eventually turn your interior into a primordial swamp. Shampoo the cloth seats to remove all that gunk. Now, forget what you think you know. There's nothing under your kitchen sink that's appropriate for washing or cleaning your car, except maybe the glass cleaner. Leave the dish detergent for the dishes, and use a proper car-washing solution. Clean the window glass last to catch all the oversprayed cleaning products.

Leather seats deserve a proper leather cleaner, followed by leather conditioner to replenish the skin's natural oils. Save the protectant for the dashboard. I strongly recommend against using protectant on the steering wheel and rubber pedals, because it can reduce your grip to dangerous levels.

Park in the shade while washing and waxing to prevent the heat of the sun from drying off the car and making water spots before you can dry them. Wet the surface beforehand to help dissolve the bug stains and loosen the dirt. Hose the salt and mud off the wheel wells and undercarriage.

Clean the wheels first to keep all the slop from getting on the bodywork. Rinse the wheels down, but wax them with the rest of the paint. Now you can wash the car all over with a lambswool wash mitt, drying it with chamois, terrycloth or microfiber towels. Save the diapers--they're too abrasive.

Choosing The Right Car Color

Want to stick out among other drivers on the road?

BankRate has a list of hottest car colors, so you can pick the one that's unique for you!

Nearly 20 percent of all 2006 vehicles (the latest year for which figures are available) were silver -- the seventh consecutive year that the color has taken the top spot.

There's good reason for that, says Chris Webb, the exterior color and trend designer for GM North America. "There's no question that silver on a vehicle looks incredible," he says. "When the light hits it and refracts, it shows off the vehicle's architectural form beautifully."

Tips From Our Lot: Chipped Winshields, A Temporary Solution

Ever had a chipped windshield? It can be annoying in several ways, first off, it's an eye-sore for sure. Secondly, gasses and air pockets can build up in these cracks resulting in windshield fractures or breaks, so it's crucial to fix the issue quickly.

But what if you can't afford to replace a windshield right now or there's too much going on for you to leave your car to get repaired? Fortunately there's a simple solution from the guys at HowStuffWorks!

What Types of Windshield Damage Can be Repaired?

Any chip in the glass as large as one inch in diameter as well as a small star crack with no more than 2 small arms extending less than a half inch in length are good candidates for a store purchased repair kit. Longer cracks can sometimes be repaired by a professional depending on the severity of the crack, the tools used, and the repairers skill level.

The window for any successful windshield repair is usually within the first month the damage occurs. Older chips can be repaired, but in general the sooner you get to it the better your results will be. You also have to keep in mind that a chip or crack left on a vehicle for any given period, may spread quickly and become unrepairable during a spout of one cold evening, rainstorm, or jarring bump on the road.

The Dart Is Increasingly Popular

Fact: The Dart is a popular hot new car. Don't believe it? Some numbers from Dodge below should prove it since they're increasing their production rate to be able to keep up with demand.

Wifr writes:

...After adding nearly 1,500 jobs, Chrysler is ramping up production of the Dodge Dart.

More than 7,000 Darts rolled of the assembly line in July, that's nearly twice as many as in June...

2012 Charger Saving Fuel For Consumers

Chrysler is always moving forward, and it shows with the update of the 2012 Charger featuring a new 8 speed transmission to boost MPG.

Newsday writes:

The new transmission brings fresh features, like paddle shifters and a Sport mode for a livelier driving experience. There are also a few other changes for 2012 . I tested a Charger SXT with the SXT Plus option package, which included the new eight-speed automatic transmission standard; the previous five-speed is still the base transmission on SE models.

Choosing the base V-6 engine doesn't mean getting a stripped Charger; the V-6 can be loaded with as many gadgets as the V-8-powered Charger R/T, though experience suggests you might not want some of them.
The SRT8 is the top-dog, high-performance model, and it's reviewed separately. See all four trim levels compared here.

Bad News For NASCAR Fans:

Bad news comes for Dodge NASCAR Fans... Dodge is backing out at the end of the year.

Sacbee reports:

Faced with the impending defection of its main partner in stock car racing, Dodge has decided to withdraw from NASCAR competition at the end of this season.

The decision announced Tuesday impacts Dodge's involvement in both the Sprint Cup Series and Nationwide Series. Penske Racing currently fields two Dodge Chargers in Sprint Cup and two Dodge Challengers in Nationwide, but Penske announced in February that it was switching to Fords for the 2013 season, leaving Dodge in the lurch.

Stop! Check Engine:

Imagine this: You're driving down the highway, everything seems smooth... No strange noises, smooth ride, then it happens... The check engine light comes on! The Check Engine light has the ability to immediately strike fear in the hearts of drivers everywhere, and leave you wondering how much the problem is going to cost to fix and if you will be able to afford it.

While it is true that sometimes the check engine light can signal a serious issue with your car, it can also signal much more simple issues with a cheap or free fix. These problems can be anything from a cylinder misfire to your gas cap not being on tight enough and everything in between.

So what can you do about it?

DON'T PANIC! If there doesn't appear to be any initial problems that are overly noticeable, see if there's a simple fix. Try checking for a loose gas cap, check all your fluid levels, and if that doesn't appear to fix it, maybe it's time to see someone about doing something a little more serious.

Get a free diagnostic! Often times car part shops such as Advanced Auto will do a free diagnostics check on your engine and can tell you what the issue is. It may be something you can take care of, or you might need to see a mechanic, but it's worth looking into.

If it is something that requires a mechanic we're here for you! With our body shop you can order parts online 24/7, view service specials, or schedule an appointment online!

2012 Chrysler 300 SRT8 Review

Are you familiar with the 2012 Chrysler 300? We are, and so is AutoGuide.com, that's why we dug up this excellent review of this awesome performance powerhouse 'Imported from Detroit'!

AutoGuide writes:

The 2012 Chrysler 300 SRT8 is an outstanding automobile. The heart of the beast is a new direct fuel injected, 6.4-liter engine which produces 470 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque. Those numbers will shoot you from zero to 60 in 4.6 seconds, and hit the timing lights at the end of a quarter-mile in 13 seconds. And if top speed is your thing, this puppy does 174 miles per hour.

Compared to the previous model, that means the new motor gains 40 horses and 80 lb-ft of thrust. Remarkably, at the same time, it increases fuel economy to 16 city and 25 highway. Those highway numbers are aided by the fact that while you’re cruising, 4 cylinders will deactivate seamlessly to save some fossil fuel. If you need to make a passing maneuver, those cylinders will reactivate instantly, and again, you won’t feel the transition.
